Car and Trailer Designs
This may seem like a crazy effort! We set out to build a slot car body to fit on an Aurora ThunderJet chassis. While that may not seem too crazy it might after we tell you we built them out of wood! We modeled the car bodies loosely after a Jeep design. We actually built two of the cars at the same time in case there were problem with either one. We got pretty far along but unfortunately didn't finish them.
We also set out to build a Trailer which we did complete. The Trailer turned out really well!
Here are the designs we created to use as plans.
Before preparing plans for the car body it was necessary to measure the Aurora Thunderjet Chassis to know where to start. These are all the dimensions we recorded and don't know how close to accurate they are. However, the farther we got with the body construction everything was lining up all right with the chassis.
We created this Measure Reference for fine measurements. We printed some of these on card stock and they were helpful when cutting the car and trailer pieces.
This document shows all the individual parts that make up the car body. Essentially the task is to cut the pieces out of thin wood stock and glue them together. Thin hobby wood (not balsa) works fine. For windows we used plastic from a Tic Tac mint container, however, other plastic will work too.
This document shows more detail of the body as placed on the chassis. Depending on which axle hole you use at the front of the chassis determines the wheelbase.
